Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said on a visit to Leipzig/Halle today he sees significant potential for growth at the airport and negotiations are underway for Winter 2013/4 and Summer 2014 to add more routes , and in the medium to long-term a new base is prospect.
The airline reported bookings on two routes to Faro and Pisa are 15% ahead of pre-planned budget, in the current financial year it expects to carry 180,000 passengers from Leipzig/Halle and next year 200,000 passengers.
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said “Leipzig is very important because he is one of our fastest growing airports in Germany. He also gives us some access to Berlin: we have seen that there are many people of Berlin who use our cheap flight to and from Leipzig. I think Leipzig is a potential foundation for future Ryanair in East Germany. “
The airline operates six routes to Faro, London Stansted, Faro, Malaga, Rome Ciampino and Trapani.
Leipzig with more than 530,000 inhabitants, is the largest city by population (the second largest being Dresden) in the federal state of Saxony, Germany. Leipzig is situated about 150 km south of Berlin at the confluence of the Weisse Elster, Pleiße, and Parthe rivers at the southerly end of the North German Plain.
