Dublin Airport Authority continues to grow business from Northern Ireland as over 521,000 passengers travelled through Dublin Airport last year up 15%. The DAA stated 70% of the traffic by Northern Ireland residents was for holiday and leisure purposes and 20% for business purposes with 75% of the traffic being point to point and 25% connecting. Interesting 62% of all passengers travelling to the Island of Ireland use Dublin Airport.
DAA Public Affairs Director, Paul O’Kane said “Dublin Airport’s business from Northern Ireland is booming, last year 521,000 Northern Ireland passengers travelled through Dublin Airport, which is equivalent to almost 30 per cent of the population of the North. Dublin Airport has an unrivaled route network with direct flights to 170 destinations, we have invested in new facilities in recent years to offer our passengers a much improved travel experience, and the new road network has made travelling from Northern Ireland to Dublin faster and more predictable.”
In June 2012 the DAA launched its first major advertising campaign in Northern Ireland entitled “Dublin Makes Sense” which it plans to further develop this year.
The DAA highlighted Dublin Airport advantages including: US CBP Facilities and 224 weekly flights to and from the United States and Canada, which is more than London Gatwick or Manchester airports, also the ease access to Europe with Aer Lingus and Ryanair short-haul networks from Dublin and range of competing airlines, and Middle East route network enabling one-stop connections to Asia and Australia.
Ireland’s air travel tax rate is €3 versus £13 (€16) in Northern Ireland thus a significant incentive to fly from Dublin Airport for short-haul routes.
