Icelandair is set to introduce the Airbus A321LR on its daily Reykjavik (KEF) to Dublin service, effective February 2, 2025. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to enhance its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft, replacing older models and strengthening its operational flexibility.
The first A321LR, named Esja and registered TF-IAA, was delivered on December 3, 2024. It is the first of three A321LRs set to be delivered by summer 2025, with two additional aircraft scheduled for delivery in 2026. These aircraft, leased from Dublin-based SMBC Aviation Capital, will serve to modernize Icelandair’s fleet, contributing to the airline’s sustainability goals.
Icelandair President and CEO Bogi Nils Bogason, said “The delivery of the first Airbus is a significant milestone in Icelandair’s 87-year history, and we look forward to welcoming our passengers on board later this month. The aircraft will unleash new opportunities for our great company, and for Iceland as a destination and hub between continents. The efficient A321 will further strengthen our business model, increase our flexibility and further support our sustainability efforts.”
The A321LR features 187 seats, including 22 in Saga Premium and 165 in Economy. The aircraft offers improved fuel efficiency and lower operating costs compared to the B757s they replace. Its 4,000-nautical-mile range and modern IFE system, developed in partnership with Panasonic, make it a cutting-edge addition to Icelandair’s fleet.
By summer 2025, Icelandair will operate a fleet of 42 aircraft, including 21 B737 MAX and four A321LRs. The airline plans to take delivery of 13 additional A321XLRs beginning in 2028, further enhancing its long-haul capabilities.
