Ryanair has announced it is permanently basing two Boeing 737-800s at Cork Airport from the 7th of November launching five new routes to Gdansk, Krakow, Wroclaw, Warsaw Modlin and Vilnius which sees the carrier competing against Wizzair on all the routes with fares 50% lower.
The Ryanair Deputy CEO Michael Cawley stated “Our Cork winter schedule 2012 now grows to two based aircraft and 10 routes which will deliver over 850,000 passengers per annum at Cork airport, sustaining over 800 on-site jobs “.
The Fine Gael Cork TD Jerry Buttimer welcomed the announcement stating “News that Ryanair is to establish five new routes from Cork, travelling to Gdansk, Wroclaw, Krakow, Warsaw and Vilnius is great news for the people of Cork, tourism in the area and for the future development of Cork Airport, this move by Ryanair, further builds the case for Cork Airport to develop its own business plan, separate to that of Dublin, the restructuring of the State’s airports back in May brought increased autonomy for Cork Airport one step closer “.
The Ryanair Deputy CEO Michael Cawley speaking to Jonathan Healy on Lunchtime show Newstalk 106-108FM stated their was a a lot of demand from it’s Polish airport partners to add the routes and it would stimulate the market with fares from €6.99/€9.99 ,and indicated it would put on more capacity if the demand is there, also the Cork Base was very succesful over the summer, traditionally the carrier had taken the second aircraft out of the base from the autumn with potential for future growth.
