On 27th July 2009 Ryanair announced Porto as it’s 33rd European Base opening on 3rd September with two based aircraft and four new routes (16 in total) with 1.5 million passengers per annum, which has been progressively expanded in the last three years to five based aircraft operating 33 routes 11 of them on a seasonal basis.
Ryanair operates a seasonal Dublin to Porto route twice weekly on Tuesday and Fridays till 6th November. The route was first launched in 2006 and cancelled in 2009 following the introduction of the €10 Air Travel Tax and increased Irish Aviation Authority charges and later restored in 2010.
Porto is also known as as Oporto in English, is the second-largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, and one of the major urban areas in Southern Europe. Its administrative limits (an area of 41.66 km²/16 sq.mi) include a population of 237,584 (2011) inhabitants.
